1940 Japanese Cavalry Badge: Student Horse Skills Competition

Here is an interesting badge dated Imperial Year 2600, which is 1940.

Excellent quality and artistry. The edges have laurel branches and the center figure shows a rider on bucking horse. And the numbers 2600. The reverse:

It is inscribed ’12th Annual National Student Horse Skills Competition, Athletic Tournament Badge, Great Japan Cavalry Association.’ So this kind of tournament was sponsored by the cavalry and no doubt served as a recruitment center to find skilled riders and future cavalrymen. Since there aren’t many horses in Japan, I’m not sure what kind of child would have been skilled at horseriding. Presently, only the wealthy can ride horses as a hobby, but maybe things were different pre-WW2.
